Pillars of Progress Award
Award for Education and Training
At the District 4 and 5 reception for the Grand Master, held on the evening of March 8, 2008, St. John's Lodge was awarded the "Pillars of Progress" award for Education and Training. The award was accepted for the Lodge by WM Jim Wold and PM Charles Tupper. The Lodge was chosen because of the ritual and educational programs that St. John's Lodge No. 9 has in place for its members. We take seriously the work of the Lodge and the education of the membership and this award shows that others see this in our Lodge. Every member of St. John's Lodge should take pride in this award as it is the entire membership that has to work together to earn one of these.

To date St. John's Lodge No. 9 has earned the following "Pillars of Progress" awards: Cooperation with Concordant Organizations - 2001, Technology - 2002, Community Involvement - 2003, Family Involvement - 2004, Fraternalism - 2005, and Education and Training - 2008. Those left for the Lodge to earn are the awards for Lodge Organization and for Public Relations.

Grand Master's Achievement Award
WB Terry Grove Receives This Year's Award
The last award given at the District 4 and 5 reception for the Grand Master was the 2008 "Grand Master's Achievement Award" for District No. 5. WB Terry joins an excellent line of recipients from St. John's Lodge No. 9. Members of the Lodge who have received the "Grand Master's Achievement Award" in past years are: WB Herb White - 1991, WB Charles Tupper - 1992, WB J. Michael Wilderman - 1993, WB John S. Mead - 1994, Bro Francis (Frank) Cushman (deceased) - 1996, VWB James F. Russell - 1997, WB Ken Lane Jr. - 2001, and WB Dennis J. Archambault - 2002.

Congratulations Terry on joining this group of Masons who have been recognized for going the extra mile.

Bikes At Sacajawea Elementary School
1st Semester Accelerated Reader Bicycles Distributed
At 9:15 AM on February 4th WM Jim Wold along with WB Joseph Lund, WB Darrel Womack, and VWB Jim Russell visited Sacajawea Elementary School for the purpose witnessing the first presentation this year of our Accelerated Reader enhancement program of giving four bicycles for reaching reading goals set by the school. The school conducts a drawing from their young readers to determine who gets the bikes each semester.

This program has had a marked effect on the reading skills of the student body. The possiblilty of winning a bicycle makes each of them try a little bit harder to learn the reading skills that will stand them in good stead later in life. It is one of the most worthwhile things we do.

Cascade Symphony Orchestra
Bro. David Karpilow Begins Our Relationship With Orchestra
At 7:30 PM on February 4th at the Cascade Symphony Orchestra's regular rehearsal WB Charles Tupper and Brother David Karpilow presented Music Director/Conductor Michael Miropolsky with the first ever check from St. John's Lodge No. 9. Bro. Karpilow plays the violin in the orchestra and brought its child oriented classical educational programs as well as its regular programming to the attention of the Lodge.

Founded in 1962, the Cascade Symphony makes its home in Edmonds, Washington. The orchestra is an integral and vital part of the musical life of the Puget Sound region. Five subscription concerts, a Children's concert and one chamber music concert are presented each year. For more than four decades, and for many yet to come, the beneficial effect of Cascade Symphony on the musical life of the community has been, and will continue to be, immeasurable. The Cascade Symphony is appreciated region-wide for musical excellence, exciting performances and unique programming.

Grand Master's Reception
WM Jim Wold Introduced to the Grand Master
On Sunday, January 20th, Worshipful Master Jim Wold and other members of the Lodge attended the Seattle Scottish Rite's Reception for New Worshipful Masters and the Most Worshipful Grand Master at the Bellevue Masonic Center. Mason's Family Night Out
Attending "National Treasure, Book of Secrets"
Along with Worshipful Master Jim Wold, RW Brothers G. Santy Lascano, Junior Grand Warden, and Gale Kenney, Senior Grand Warden, About forty Masons, their families, guests, and sweethearts attended the movie "National Treasure, Book of Secrets." Everyone met at the Oak Tree Cinemas on Aurora Avenue North on the evening of January 18th.

Those attending this outing took full advantage of this opportunity for social fellowship between the Brethren, their friends and families. Many met in groups prior to the event to have dinner or coffee. Then everyone met in front of the Theater at about 7:15 to get their tickets, which were purchased and distributed by St. John's Lodge No. 9.

The movie was excellent fun and most stayed afterward to have the picture taken for the website. Those attending went from about ten years to ninety years of age. It appealed to all and was great fun for everyone.

St. John's Lodge has other outings scheduled throughout the year. See this website's events calendar for the dates, events, and times.

Christmas For Those In Need
St. John's Delivers

Over the weekend of December 22 and 23 members of St. John's Lodge No. 9 headed by WB Ken Lane Jr. bought, wrapped, and delivered food and gifts to families in need. We Found these families through the Greenwood Food bank and there were many happy faces as well as tears of joy.

This is one of the most gratifying things the Lodge does each year. All members who want to take part are welcome.

The full story of the elfhood of our membership for this Christmas' help to needy families is found on our report page.

Readers Get Bicycles
Accelerated Reader Bikes Program Drawing

On Friday, December 21st members of St. John's Lodge No. 9 attended John Rogers elementary for their annual Christmas program. The school's music club sang songs of Christmas amid an overflowing tiny gymnasium packed with onlooking parents. At the center of the Christmas celebration was the third, and final, installment of St. John's Lodge No. 9's Bikes for Books program for the year of 2007. In conjunction with GM Charles McQuery's Bikes for Books Charity, St. John's Lodge No. 9 sponsored bicycle drawings in the months of Janury, May, and now December, for 3 area schools. Cedar Way, Sacajawea, and finally John Rogers Elementary schools. The final 4 bikes for a total of 36 bikes were distributed in 2007 to the 3 schools as an addition to St. John's Accelerated Reader Program(ARP).

The Full story is found here.

Operation Kid's Smile
Christmas For Families At Fort Lewis

On December 15th VWB Chuck Brockway and his lady Sherla took two van loads of St. John's members to Fort Lewis where they shopped for clothing, toys, and food for families on the base. They then delivered these goodies to the chosen ones at home and what joy it brought to these military families while a spouse or parent is fighting for us overseas. We are not sure who had the better time, the families or the team members who delivered the Christmas goodies.
